As we get near 2011-2012 training camp it has become clear that Hitmen GM Kelly Kisio wanted to create competition among veteran and returning forwards this year, as well as the 3 young kids who got into game action last year. By my count the Hitmen already had 13 returning players on the roster and that is before the 2 imports and 2 more WHL caliber forward pickups the past month or so. Here is the list:
Returning from last year:
1. Jimmy Bubnick
2. John Lawrence
3. Danny Gayle
4. Justin Kirsch
5. Cody Sylvester
6. Brooks Macek
7. Nathan MacMaster
8. Trevor Cheek
9. Brendan Santini
10. Rob Trzonkowski
11. Luke Gordon-2 games played
12. Chase Clayton-55 games played
13. Greg Chase-5 games played
Now add to the mix:
a. Waiver pickup Kenton Miller, an overager, who by the sounds of it is an extremely hard worker. If he is no longer with the Hitmen, someone please let me kn ow.
b. Recent pickup, Brady Brassart, an 18 year old center who had 32 points last year in Spokane.
c. Import Victor Rask, who has been seen in Calgary but may end up in the AHL, depends on how things play out with Carolina Hurricanes.
d. Import Alexander Gogolev, who is also in Calgary ready to attend camp as a 19 year old.
That makes 17 forwards without counting a few other prospects who might be closing in on jobs. It should make for a very interesting camp. Its time for some of these guys to really show up and earn their spots or they will not be on this year's Hitmen squad.
